About Leading the Way

Leading the Way is dedicated to enhancing the relationship of both ends of the leash through knowledge, compassion and building long term relationships with our clients — two and four-legged.

We have more than 25 years of experience in training and educating both dogs and their humans. Our goal and mission is to share our extensive knowledge of canine behavior, with doggie daycare, obedience training, trick training, therapy dog training, show training, and behavior modification in order to build strong canine and human partnerships built on trust, love, and respect that lasts a lifetime.

Leading the Way was established by Shannon Fitzgerald-Mehlman in 1992. She has completed over 11,500 hours of apprentice education with some of the top trainers and organizations in the country, including, but not limited to, Ian Dunbar, Sue Sternberg , Dumb Friends League of Colorado, Guiding Eyes for the Blind in NY and the Animal Protection Society, NC.
Classes and Workshops are available at a variety of locations throughout New England including our own state of the art Training Center in Florence, MA and at Camp Unleashed.
In addition, Shannon is a proud supporter of the communities of Western, MA. She has been a 4-H Leader for 20 years for the Dog Care Program. She founded Pioneer K-9 4-H Dog Club. This is a second generation club and open to youth 7-19 who share a passion for dogs! She offers workshops, behavioral support and temperament testing throughout New England for local shelters, humane societies and rescue organizations, schools, and community groups.
